When doing research on Magic Chef portable ice makers, I came across something that surprised me. Amazon offers a few brands of these ice makers, but I quickly noticed that many of them looked pretty similar.
Magic Chef Portable Ice Maker – Clones?
One Magic Chef ice maker model looks exactly like the ones offered by three other brands: Emerson, NewAir and KoldFront (an EdgeStar brand). There’s definitely rebranding going on.
My Suggestion For These Ice Makers
So who’s the original manufacturer? Who cares! Even though the machines carry the same specs, I would probably opt for the NewAir branded model over MagicChef unless you have strong love for the brand for some reason. Currently, the NewAir model is between $30 to $40 cheaper with free shipping. The Magic Chef model is stocked and shipped by another retailer, and shipping is over $25.

This ice maker is designed to make 27 pounds of ice every 24 hours. Get one of these going the night before a party, and run it during and you’ll be just fine.
It creates 9 pieces of ice every freeze cycle, and you get the option to choose between three different sizes. Personally I like small ice cubes since they cool drinks faster.
Some convenience features on this machine include a window on top to see the ice levels, and it also includes an indicator for that including the water levels.

This Magic Chef ice maker from is not one that is so widely rebranded as the above model. This features a full stainless steel body and a small step up in ice capacity.
It creates 30 pounds of ice in 24 hours instead of 27. You can get ice in as little as 7 minutes after powering the unit on and just adding water.
It shares similar design such as a see through window on top, and convenient buttons on the front. This is a convenient model that easily fits on your countertop.
